`Gecoördineerde steun zwakke banken`

Europese regeringsleiders bekijken hoe op een "gecoördineerde manier" zwakke Europese banken kunnen worden geherkapitaliseerd. Dat meldt de Financial Times dinsdagavond. Europese ministers van financiën zouden in Luxemburg tevens geconcludeerd hebben dat te weinig is gedaan om financiële markten te overtuigen.

"Capital positions of European banks must be reinforced to provide additional safety margins and thus reduce uncertainty," Olli Rehn told the FT. "This should be regarded as an integral part of the EU’s comprehensive strategy to restore confidence and overcome the crisis.”

“There is an increasingly shared view that we need a concerted, co-ordinated approach in Europe while many of the elements are done in the member states,” Olli Rehn, European commissioner for economic affairs, told the Financial Times. “There is a sense of urgency among ministers and we need to move on.” Mr Rehn cautioned that while there was “no formal decision” to begin a Europe-wide effort, co-ordination among EU’s institutions – including the European Central Bank, European Banking Authority and the European Commission – on necessary measures had intensified."

No formal decision… Toch was het FT bericht goed voor een swing van 400 punten van de Dow Jones vanaf het intraday dieptepunt.
